Measuring and Analyzing Human Differences

To understand and analyze human variability so that we may accommodate it in system (product) design, we employ statistical concepts such as:

  • Population
  • Sample
  • Frequency distribution.

Population refers to the group we wish to study.  However, because a population is often quite large, we use a statistical technique called "sampling."

"Sampling" is selecting a set of members of the population that we expect to be "representative" of the entire population.  To help to ensure that the "sample" is representative, these individuals are selected randomly, a method that is termed "random sampling."
