Loss Prevention

The good news is that noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is preventable. To prevent NIHL, exposure must be controlled at work and also in home, leisure, and other environments. While most workers understand that exposure to damaging noise can occur in the work place, many do not realize the potential for damage in non-work exposures. Use of lawn mowers, tractors, leaf and snow blowers, saws, sanders, grinders, off-terrain vehicles, snow mobiles, motorcycles, power boats, and attendance at rock concerts--are all activities that can induce hearing loss. Measures to prevent hearing loss are:

  • Avoid exposure to high noise levels,
  • Wear well-fitting ear plugs or high quality protective earmuffs when in high noise environments--this includes home and recreational activities. Ear plugs that are individually fitted are best.
  • When noise levels exceed 100dBA, wear both earplugs and earmuffs.
