VDT
Lighting Recommendations
The
following are general recommendations to control computer vision
syndrome in the workplace.
-
User's should have regular eye examinations and discuss with the
ophthalmologist or optometrist the amount of VDT use during the
workday, the nature of the task being performed and current viewing
distance. A co-worker can assist in measuring this distance, if
a human factors specialist is not available.
- Use
appropriate viewing distance and viewing angle.
- Use
indirect instead of direct lighting, if possible.
- Provide
supplementary task lighting that is individually adjustable both
in light level and position.
- Do
not place VDT's in front of windows, position perpendicular to
windows.
- Draw
blinds/drapes.
- Periodically
look away from the computer screen and focus on distant objects
or close the eyes for a brief period (every 20 to 30 minutes).
- Reduce
the amount of ambient lighting by dimmer switches, turning off
some lights, or disconnecting one or more fluorescent bulbs.
- Do
not locate VDTs under or in front of overhead light fixtures.
- If
all else fails, use a high quality glare screen that has been
approved by the American Optometric Association (AOA).
