Lighting

Lighting needs to be selected specifically for the task and the user. More light is required for the performance of reading, writing (including mathematical computation), and for fine motor tasks such as the assembly or disassembly of small components. Users that are over 40 and others with some types of visual impairment require more light.

We will first address the work environment for use of Visual Display Terminals (VDTs). Since wide-scale introduction of computers into the workplace in the 1980s, the most frequent physical complaints have been vision related. VDT quality has increased over the years in terms of resolution and flicker, but vision related complaints have remained and even increased. Why?

  • Not all users have the opportunity to work with the latest VDT technology.
  • More sophisticated, powerful software development has led to more workers using VDTs and using them for longer periods during the work day.
  • Lighting is inappropriate for VDT use.
  • VDT workstation configuration is inadequate.
