Mental Workload

• This is a prime concern of psychologists designing job tasks.
• Specific issues to consider include:
  - Memory capabilities and limitations of users,
  - Reaction times necessary for the job and capable by the users.
• Measures used to assess the mental workload of users include:
  - Objective task measures, for example speed and error rate,
  - Subjective measures, such as questionnaires or interviews,
  - Physiological measures, for example heart rate, blood pressure.
A job design goal is to create tasks and jobs that neither bore nor overload the user.
