Long-term vs. Short-term Memory

Long-term Memory
Short-term Memory
  • Capacity nearly unlimited
    - billions of items can be stored
  • Access is slow
  • Availability limited
  • Items must be rehearsed to get them into Long-term memory
  • Storage time is generally a person's lifetime
  • Capacity severely limited
    - Miller's theory, 7 + 2 bits
  • Access nearly instantaneous
  • Full availability
  • Items go directly from perception stage into Short-term memory
  • Storage time is generally 10 to 30 seconds
