Special Displays

The proper text/font size must be selected for safety critical system displays such as those used in air traffic control, aircraft cockpits, and status/maintenance monitoring. Font size and other characteristics must be chosen to ensure legibility and readability. The same is true for other "specialized" displays, for use by the general public, such as electronic highway message boards and airport status displays for arrivals and departures.

For specialized displays, font and symbol size must be carefully determined based on:

  • Visual angle,
  • Visual distance,
  • Color use,
  • Contrast,
  • Ambient illumination,
  • Visual abilities in the user population.
