Case & Spacing
- Use
proportional spacing - Proportional spacing is more legible
and facilitates word recognition. Monospacing is appropriate when
an aligned structure is needed such as in tables of numbers. Monospacing
can also be used in single line input fields for clarity.
- Upper
and lower case - UPPERCASE IS MORE DIFFICULT TO READ
than lowercase. Lowercase letters are more distinct from each
other which aids the perception of words by shape. Uppercase should
be reserved for titles, captions, or labels that need to standout.
- Mixed
Case - increases reading ease.
- Uppercase
- decreases search time when embedded in mixed or lower case.
- Italics
- Avoid the use of italics on electonic displays. They are
typically difficult to read, particularly for longer text passages
displayed. One reason, is that displays do not render slanted
lines well. As opposed to vertical lines, slanted lines appear
wavy.
