Redundant Coding

Although color can be an effective coding mechanism for grouping display elements or drawing attention to specific information, it should not be the only means of coding. Redundant coding should always be used. In the graph below dashed, dotted, and solid lines are used in addition to color-coding. This is to accommodate individuals whose color vision is deficient, as well as to ensure that a screen print-out in black & white can still be deciphered.

Graph using different colors and different patterns is helpful if you cannot rely on all users being able to view color.
