Summary:

In this module, you were introduced to the non-visual sensory systems, that is, the auditory, tactual, and olfactory systems. Illustrative displays designed to utilize these sense modalities were presented. Also discussed were the conditions under which these displays are optimally used either to replace or augment the visual system. Combinations of non-visual displays for redundant information conveyance were also described. Examples were provided of the current state of technology for these displays, as well as anticipated future developments and applications.

The module on visual display and this module on non-visual displays will prepare you for the next module on "Controls." Display-control integration is an important consideration in systems design and a classic human factors topic.
