Lesson Goals

This module introduces various types of controls and basic human factors principles that should be incorporated into their design. The first part of the module reviews controls that we encounter in our daily lives in addition to more complex control applications. Whatever the use or type of control, there are general human factors design principles and guidelines that should be followed in either designing or selecting a control. In addition, to presenting these principles, we will introduce other control issues. The last portion of the module is dedicated to the impact of control automation.

At the end of this module, you should have an appreciation for the importance of proper control design in supporting error-free human performance and preventing accidents and injuries. You should also be familiar with some of the basic design principles for controls. This module consists of the following subparts:

  • Applications
  • Control Types
  • Human Factors Principles
  • Control Automation
